About Salalah
Salalah lies on the southern coast of Oman, facing the Arabian Sea in the Dhofar region. The city sits on a coastal plain backed by mountains, and for part of the year it catches monsoon winds that turn the surrounding hillsides green with mist and vegetation, a phenomenon rare on the Arabian Peninsula. Travellers staying here find themselves near long sandy beaches where the ocean stretches toward the horizon, and close to the historic old town with its traditional markets selling frankincense, a commodity that brought this region ancient trading wealth. The nearby archaeological site of Al-Baleed preserves the remains of a medieval port city, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, while the lush wadis and coconut groves of the surrounding countryside offer a landscape quite unlike the desert interiors found elsewhere in the Gulf. The city also serves as a gateway to the Empty Quarter, the vast sand desert that extends across the border into Saudi Arabia.
