About Al Hamra

Al Hamra is a historic town in northeastern Oman, located at the foot of the Hajar Mountains in the interior region of Al Dakhiliyah. The settlement sits on the edge of a vast desert plain, with irrigated date palm groves stretching between the town and the mountain slopes. Al Hamra is known for its exceptionally well-preserved traditional mud-brick houses, some of which have stood for centuries, featuring distinctive Omani architectural elements such as carved wooden doors, ornate balconies, and towers built from sarooj, a local clay-based mortar. The nearby village of Misfat al Abriyeen, perched on a mountainside above terraced gardens, is accessible by road and offers a glimpse into traditional falaj irrigation systems that have sustained agriculture in this arid region for generations. Travellers staying in Al Hamra find themselves within reach of Jebel Shams, Oman's highest mountain, where dramatic canyon views and walking routes draw visitors seeking cooler temperatures and rugged scenery. The town also lies close to the ancient UNESCO-listed beehive tombs of Al Ayn and the former capital of Nizwa, with its imposing fort and lively souq.
