About Nizwa
Nizwa sits in the interior of northern Oman, at the foot of the Western Hajar Mountains. It was once the capital of the country and remains a centre of culture and religion in the region. The city is known for its historic fort, which dominates the skyline with its large round tower, and for the adjoining souk where traders sell silver jewellery, pottery, dates, and traditional crafts. A traveller staying here would be near the date palm oasis that stretches through the surrounding plain, fed by the ancient falaj irrigation system that is recognised by UNESCO. The nearby town of Bahla, with its own fortress and pottery traditions, lies a short drive to the west, while the mountain road to Jebel Akhdar rises to the north, passing through terraced villages that grow roses, pomegranates, and walnuts at high altitude. The landscape around Nizwa is dry and rocky, cut by wadis that fill with water after rain.
