About Madaba
Madaba is a historic city in central Jordan, situated on the King’s Highway roughly midway between Amman and the Dead Sea. The city sits on a highland plateau overlooking the Jordan Valley and the hills beyond, offering sweeping views toward the west. It is best known for its extraordinary collection of Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics, most famously the Madaba Map, a sixth-century mosaic floor depicting the Holy Land that lies within the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint George. Travellers staying here find themselves within walking distance of numerous churches and museums showcasing this ancient craft, as well as the bustling local market in the old town. The city also serves as a convenient base for exploring nearby religious and natural sites, including Mount Nebo, where tradition holds that Moses viewed the Promised Land, and the baptism site at Bethany Beyond the Jordan along the Jordan River.
