About Salt

Salt is an ancient city in northwestern Jordan, perched on a series of hills overlooking the Jordan Valley. It lies a short drive west of Amman and serves as the administrative centre of Balqa Governorate. The city grew prosperous during the late Ottoman period, and its historic downtown preserves one of the finest collections of limestone buildings from that era in the country. Narrow streets wind between old merchant houses with distinctive domed roofs and arcaded facades, many now housing small museums and cultural centres. The Abu Jaber House, a restored Ottoman mansion, illustrates the wealth that once flowed through this trading hub. Travellers staying here find themselves near archaeological sites including the nearby tomb of Prophet Joshua, local markets selling produce from the surrounding farmland, and viewpoints across the fertile valley below. The city offers a quieter alternative to the capital while remaining within easy reach of Jerash, the Dead Sea, and Amman's attractions.
